Understanding Yarn Count Systems:

  • Indirect System (Ne, Nm): Primarily used for natural spun fibers like cotton, wool, and linen. It measures the length of yarn per a fixed weight. Rule of thumb: The higher the number, the finer the yarn.
  • Direct System (Denier, Tex, dTex): Commonly used for synthetic continuous filaments like polyester, nylon, and silk. It measures the weight of yarn per a fixed length. Rule of thumb: The higher the number, the thicker the yarn.
Indirect System Higher value = Finer yarn
Ne (English Cotton) -
Nm (Metric Count) -
Direct System Higher value = Thicker yarn
